Mediterranean garden with Provencal vegetation

Ce jardin méditerranéen d’une surface de 4 000 m² intègre plusieurs types d'espaces et d'ambiances. La mise en scène de l'entrée de la maison s’appuie sur des éléments paysagers typiquement provençaux. On y trouve notamment un mini-champ de lavandes, une mini-oliveraie, ainsi qu’un beau figuier.
La piscine et la terrasse
Un objectif important du projet était de donner vie au coin piscine et terrasse existant. Le concepteur-paysagiste a imaginé un cheminement original le long de la piscine, composé de pas japonais en piquets de schiste, de longueurs variables, qui créent une transition particulièrement graphique avec la vaste pelouse qui sert de terrain de jeu à toute la famille.
Des végétaux de climat méditerranéen
Le paysagiste a conçu des massifs évoquant une ambiance exotique à partir de végétaux de climat méditerranéen. Pour ces massifs, il a utilisé une palette végétale restreinte, incluant différents types de graminées.
Il a également positionné chaque plante de façon visuellement aléatoire et répétitive, afin de créer un effet naturaliste.
Végétation et potager
En ce qui concerne la végétation, il a également privilégié des plantes au feuillage persistant, d'une couleur allant du gris-bleu (agave et yucca rostrata) au vert foncé (palmier de Chine et phormium) et des plantes offrant des floraisons jaunes-oranges au printemps (kniphofia), mais des couleurs plus douces en été (par exemple agapanthe). Enfin, on trouve un potager en carrés d’ osier tressé. Ce potager permet aux enfants de cultiver des légumes et fruits de saison à leur propre hauteur.
Organisation de la pelouse
En ce qui concerne la vaste pelouse en accès direct de la maison, le paysagiste a proposé la répartition suivante :
- sur un tiers de la surface, du gazon en rouleaux a été plaqué pour un effet et un usage quasiment immédiats ;
- sur les deux tiers restants, du gazon rustique a été semé, ce qui donne un résultat plus lent (environ 12 mois), mais constitue une solution plus économique.
Cette partie semée peut alors être traitée de deux façons différentes, en fonction des souhaits des clients. Un entretien régulier (pouvant être assuré par un robot-tondeuse) associé à un arrosage adapté donnent une pelouse dense et bien verte. Il est également possible de se passer d'arrosage et de ne prévoir qu'un fauchage 2 à 3 fois dans l'année, pour un effet du type "prairie fleurie".
This 4,000 m² Mediterranean garden incorporates several types of spaces and atmospheres. The staging of the house entrance draws on typically Provençal landscaping elements. These include a mini lavender field, a mini olive grove and a beautiful fig tree.
The pool and terrace
An important objective of the project was to bring the existing pool and terrace area to life. The landscape designer devised an original path running alongside the pool, made up of Japanese stepping stones in slate stakes of varying lengths, creating a particularly graphic transition with the vast lawn that serves as a play area for the whole family.
Mediterranean climate plants
The landscape designer designed borders evoking an exotic atmosphere using plants suited to the Mediterranean climate. For these borders, he used a limited plant palette, including different types of grasses.
He also positioned each plant in a visually random and repetitive way, in order to create a naturalistic effect.
Vegetation and kitchen garden
In terms of vegetation, he also favoured plants with evergreen foliage, ranging in colour from grey-blue (agave and yucca rostrata) to dark green (Chinese windmill palm and phormium), and plants offering yellow-orange blooms in spring (kniphofia) but softer colours in summer (such as agapanthus). Finally, there is a kitchen garden with woven wicker raised beds. This kitchen garden allows children to grow seasonal vegetables and fruit at their own height.
Lawn layout
Regarding the vast lawn with direct access from the house, the landscape designer proposed the following arrangement:
- on one third of the surface, roll-out turf was laid for an almost immediate effect and use;
- on the remaining two thirds, hardwearing grass seed was sown, giving a slower result (around 12 months) but representing a more economical solution.
This seeded section can then be maintained in two different ways, depending on the clients' preferences. Regular maintenance (which can be handled by a robotic lawnmower) combined with appropriate irrigation produces a dense, lush green lawn. It is also possible to forgo watering and only plan for mowing 2 to 3 times a year, for a “wildflower meadow” effect.
