Transformation of a roof into a rooftop

Pour transformer leur toit en une terrasse idyllique, les propriétaires de cet appartement ont fait appel aux services d’un paysagiste pour créer un havre de paix avec un style « Loft », « Atelier » et une végétation écoresponsable.
Déroulement du projet
Le toit de l’immeuble faisant partie d’une copropriété, une partie des travaux a dû être réalisée collectivement, notamment la sécurisation du toit avec la pose des garde-corps.
Le projet a ensuite été réalisé en trois phases gérées par l’architecte paysagiste. Tout d’abord, le gros œuvre qui consistait à créer un accès direct à la terrasse via un escalier et une cabine. La seconde étape consistait à poser le sol ainsi que l'habillage des murs. Enfin, la terrasse a été végétalisée et décorée avec du mobilier de jardin pour devenir un véritable havre de paix en plein cœur de la ville.
Une verrière extérieure
L'appartement étant situé juste en dessous de la terrasse, l’architecte paysagiste a installé un escalier hélicoïdal pour y accéder directement. Pour protéger cet accès, le paysagiste a complètement transformé l'ancien local de machinerie du monte-charge. Entièrement vitrée, cette nouvelle extension ne coupe pas l'espace de la terrasse. La verrière extérieure s'inscrit parfaitement dans le décor en apportant un style « atelier » au toit-terrasse.
Le sol et les murs
Le sol en bois de la terrasse a été réalisé en pin thermomodifié, un procédé de chauffe du bois qui permet de le rendre résistant et imputrescible. Écologique, cette technique fonctionne sur différentes essences et permet d'utiliser du bois européen à la place de bois exotiques.
Afin de sécuriser l'espace tout en diminuant la sensation de vertige, les garde-corps ont été recouverts d'une toile blanche.
Pour masquer les terrasses mitoyennes et limiter le vis-à-vis, le paysagiste a installé des canisses d'osier qui servent également de support à des plantes grimpantes et permettent de protéger la terrasse du vent.
Un toit-terrasse végétalisé
Dans la mesure où les propriétaires souhaitaient conserver le maximum d'espace, la majorité des plantes ont été positionnées en périphérie de la terrasse.
Pour économiser du bois et protéger la végétation du gel, les bacs ont été encaissés sous le plancher et entourés de galets.
De façon à contraster avec les lignes très droites de l’espace, le paysagiste a choisi des pots arrondis.
Dans un coin, un olivier a été planté dans un bac banc fait du même bois que la terrasse.
To transform their rooftop into an idyllic terrace, the owners of this apartment enlisted the services of a landscape designer to create a haven of peace with a “Loft” and “Studio” style and eco-responsible planting.
Project development
As the building's roof is part of a co-ownership, some of the work had to be carried out collectively, in particular the securing of the roof with the installation of balustrades.
The project was then carried out in three phases managed by the landscape designer. First, the structural work involved creating direct access to the terrace via a staircase and a cabin. The second phase consisted of laying the floor and cladding the walls. Finally, the terrace was planted and decorated with garden furniture to become a true haven of peace in the heart of the city.
An outdoor glazed extension
As the apartment is located just below the terrace, the landscape designer installed a spiral staircase for direct access. To protect this access, the designer completely transformed the old lift machinery room. Entirely glazed, this new extension does not cut off the terrace space. The outdoor glazed extension fits perfectly into the setting, bringing a “studio” feel to the rooftop terrace.
The floor and walls
The wooden terrace floor was made from thermally modified pine, a wood heating process that makes it resistant and rot-proof. This ecological technique works on various types of wood and makes it possible to use European timber instead of exotic species.
To secure the space while reducing the feeling of vertigo, the balustrades were covered with white canvas.
To conceal the adjoining terraces and limit overlooking, the designer installed wicker reed screens that also serve as supports for climbing plants and protect the terrace from the wind.
A planted rooftop terrace
As the owners wanted to preserve as much space as possible, the majority of the plants were positioned around the perimeter of the terrace.
To save on wood and protect the vegetation from frost, the planters were set into the floor and surrounded by pebbles.
To contrast with the very straight lines of the space, the designer chose rounded pots.
In one corner, an olive tree was planted in a bench-planter made from the same wood as the terrace.
