Urban micro-garden with naturalistic beds
This small urban garden of approximately 300 m² incorporates a variety of spaces and planting atmospheres. The project aimed to create the feel of a lush garden with abundant flowering. The challenge was also to carve out multiple outdoor living areas and give the illusion that the space is larger than it actually is.
To expand the sense of space, various terraces and seating areas were created, multiplying viewpoints across the garden and making the most of every square metre available. A path of small hexagonal slabs — featuring a pattern designed by Gaudí (the same as those found in Barcelona) — winds through the main planting bed and provides access to the terraces and seating areas nestled within the vegetation.
A large timber deck offers a relaxed lounge and entertaining space. The narrow boards used (9 cm wide) visually enlarge the area. The eye is deceived by the number of boards it perceives and infers a larger surface than actually exists. A covered terrace also allows you to enjoy the outdoors while staying cool on hot summer days.
The plants in the naturalistic beds were selected for their exuberant effect (foliage, flowers, form). Here again, the large acanthus leaves paired with bamboo (Phyllostachys dulcis) visually expand the space and screen the garden from all external visual references.
